Two and Four-Wheel Designs Take Home Big Wins at ‘Mobility Awards’ Automotive Brand Contest, Motorcycle Brand Contest and Bicycle Brand Contest

Brand of the Year 2017 at the Automotive Brand Contest: Hyundai


Speedy, sporty, luxurious and at times radically simple. The proud winners at the German Design Council’s three ‘Mobility Awards’ events are many things — and anything but boring.


With the Automotive Brand Contest, the German Design Council annually honours outstanding performance in product and communications design in the international automobile and motor vehicle industries. The Motorcycle Brand Contest and Bicycle Brand Contest, first added to the line-up two years ago, recognise design accomplishments in motor and human-powered two-wheel vehicles with their own awards. Both markets have grown significantly in recent years, thanks in part to the power of superb design.
The three competitions’ prize winners were selected by independent juries boasting international experts from the areas of media, design and brand communication, as well as representatives of higher education institutions. In considering the entries, the juries focussed not only on individual products or communications measures, but on consistent and comprehensive brand showcasing.
 
Automotive Brand Contest Winners: C3 Creative Code and Content, Hyundai, Volvo and VW
The Automotive Brand Contest is the only brand and design contest for international automobile brands and their partners and became an important industry event in a matter of years following its initial launch. Andrej Kupetz, Executive Director of the German Design Council and chairman of the jury, explains the contest’s unique added value: ‘With its unique and comprehensive perspective on the full showcasing of brands, the Automotive Brand Contest recognises not only outstanding designs, but also reveals trends and developments currently under way in the industry.’
This year’s ‘Agency of the Year’ award went to C3 Creative Code and Content; the title ‘Brand of the Year’ was awarded to Hyundai. The Volvo Car Group was honoured as ‘Team of the Year’, and Volkswagen received the contest’s ‘Innovation of the Year’ award for its SEDRIC Self Driving Car Level 5 concept. Additional winners in the competition’s ten categories included automotive companies and agencies responsible for outstanding design and brand communication entries.

Future Concepts and Accessories at the Motorcycle Brand Contest

With the Motor Cycle Brand Contest, now in its second edition, the German Design Council aims to emphasize the importance and innovative strengths of the motorcycle industry and honour the long and rich tradition that has given us these fascinating vehicles. The motorcycle’s central position as a pleasure vehicle is propelling brand managers in the industry to produce outstanding designs in all categories, from classic to futuristic.
The German motorcycle market is booming with record numbers of new models, and interest in motorcycles is on the rise. With the VITPILEN 401, designed by Kiska, Husqvarna shows that it isn’t always necessary to set new performance records. And BMW peers well into the future with its VISION NEXT 100 concept, showcasing a range of new possibilities on two wheels.

Bicycle Brand Contest: High-End Designs for the Bicycle’s 200th Birthday
The prize winners at this year’s Bicycle Brand Contest — a milestone anniversary in the history of the bicycle — clearly set themselves apart with great designs and extraordinary attention to detail. The winning brands were a showcase of just how much professionalism and passion companies are investing in their work today. The fact that many of the founders, owners and employees of bicycle design companies are themselves passionate cyclists is an ideal point of departure for developing authentic brand communication and story-telling that wins the hearts of consumers.
The contest’s ‘Best of Best’ award went to Cervélo for its P5X triathlon bike. The Lumos Helmet, with integrated lights, indicators and brake lights, was awarded the title of ‘Innovation of the Year’. The Swedish maker of protective equipment and accessories, POC, came away with the ‘Brand of the Year’ award. Prizes also went to children’s bicycle maker woom and Storck Bicycles, among others.

The award ceremony will take place on 12 September 2017 during the 67th International Motor Show (IAA) in Frankfurt am Main.
